Strengths

Right-handed… McCallum is one of the top point guard prospects in the country and takes his talents to Michigan to play for his father Ray at the University of Detroit… McCallum possesses an excellent basketball IQ and understands the game well, which allows him to make solid decisions with the ball. He can get into the paint and finish above the rim or penetrate deep into the lane and kick out to a teammate… His pass-first mentality and excellent ball-handling skills allow him to make the simple play and avoid forcing the pass when his teammates are least expecting it. He shields the ball well using his body on between the legs and crossover dribbles and explodes out of the move to give himself the advantage. He plays under control, whether he is looking to score or running a play to set up a teammate… He seems to be just as comfortable running transition offense as he is at running sets. He does a great job at advancing the ball down the floor to keep pressure on the defense…He has developed excellent leadership characteristics on and off the court. In the rare event that a teammate was confused with the offensive set, McCallum pulled the ball back out of the halfcourt setting and directed his teammates to the correct spots… He plays with terrific energy on the defensive end. He pressures the ball well using his quick hands and lateral quickness to disturb opposing lead guards…
Weaknesses

With a pass-first mentality and a "true point" guard label, McCallum must fine-tune his ability to recognize the situations in the game, i.e. shot clock running down, and create a scoring opportunity for himself. There were times when the game clock would be running down and McCallum is still looking to set up a teammate when he is very capable of scoring himself… He is a streaky shooter. He has the shooter's mentality that you need for the next level where he can miss 3, 4 or 5 shots in a row and keep firing and demanding the attention of the defense… There seem to be times when McCallum seems pre-determined to score on a drive and puts his head down while charging into the lane. With a simple jump-stop in his arsenal, he can keep the defense off balance even further as he is more than capable of taking the ball to the rim of pulling up for a short floater… On the defensive end, McCallum can play with a bit too much energy, getting up to close to his opponent, exposing himself and getting beat off the dribble as a result. His father's team defensive philosophy can help him get a better understanding of how to correct this problem…
