The Scouting Report:
Strengths
Right-handed… With the ball in his hands, Boatright is one of the quickest players in the country. Combined with an unbelievably tight handle that seemingly has the ball attached to a string, Boatright can get any where he wants on the floor. Needless to say, he is extremely dangerous, especially in the open floor… Boatright has very good athleticism, allowing him to hang in the air and finish above the rim or finish shots with floaters and pull-ups… He possesses above-average court vision, aided by his probing and penetrating through the defense to open up gaps for teammates. Although he scores the basketball very well for the Huskies, his ability to get teammates involved should not be underestimated…
Weaknesses
Before getting into Boatright’s weaknesses in his game, we must note that he does have some off-the-court issues. He committed to both USC and West Virginia before eventually de-committing and obviously committing to UConn in the end. He was also suspended six games at the start of his freshman season by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits. Boatright was then suspended a second time during his freshman season for “conditions and events that pre-date the University’s relationship” involving the reception of a plane ticket while playing AAU basketball… Boatright needs to hit the weight room and add some strength to his frame. That would aid him tremendously in finishing in the lane offensively with his quickness and athleticism, but also defensively where he is bodied-up too often… He must develop a more consistent perimeter game, specifically from behind the arc. His range and confidence are not the problem, but overall, Boatright needs to improve… He is a bit undersized for the next level- standing at about 6′, not ideal for the prototypical point guard.
